Apple Pie

Carl Sagan said, “If you wish to make
an apple pie
from scratch
you must first invent
the universe.”

He’s right you know. Scratch — the unencumbered
beginning.

Underneath everything is something
else.

The beginning?

A strike anywhere match dragged along the flint
of time.

Igniting creation.

The Seeker

When you lasso a stagecoach
every minute is a new frontier.
Go west or north, head south or east—
Beware, there’s snow in the Rockies.

But pioneers don’t care about the weather.
Travelers travel prepared!
Lewis and Clark never complained.
Well, at least not to me.

The risks of uncharted landscapes
pale in comparison to a life
rooted in routine.
Day-to-day drudgeries.

Not an explorer’s idea of terrain.

A contract with the unknown—adventure!
Fate’s relentless command
Trailblaze! Seek! Find!
The next promised land.

My Ruler Mercury

Mercury’s in retrograde,
I will not do a thing.
For Mercury controls my days,
For Mercury I sing.

I went to see my doctor,
He referred me to a shrink.
My actions are not sane these days,
Blame Mercury, I think.

I’m scared to drive,
I’m feeling sick,
I’m so confused,
I need a kick...

I want it all to go away,
So I can reconnect.
Maybe all I really need,
Is Mercury direct.

Fifteen Senryu Reflecting Forty-Two Years

an invitation
to join earthbound symphonies
the call accepted

tiny knocked up egg
i am conceived and growing
the journey begins

a new world appears
i already want guidance
who are these people

give me attention
i catapult food at you
why did i come here

kindergarten class
blocks and crayons and long naps
illusion begins

memorize the facts
school pap, no contemplation
what a way to live

teenage years arrive
do not tell me what to do
nothing can be done

serious trauma
life is so unfair it seems
lets try some cocaine

loony bin hello
what drugs are you giving me
who are these doctors

illusion complete
you are the ones who need pills
I am not staying

life continues on
twenty one years and counting
san francisco nights

sex, drugs, rock and roll
oysters, champagne, more cocaine
have you seen my car

illness wakes me up
illuminates compassion
now give me some pie

life on this planet
way too short or way too long
too early to tell

this is not forty
this is not even fifty
it is just right now
